Cambrian Biopharma is looking for a strategic and entrepreneurial leader to manage our Venture team. The Venture Team Leader will be a key member of Cambrian’s executive team, overseeing one of the three business units within the company. They will drive consistency and rigor in our investment process including outreach, due diligence, hypothesis generation, and pipeline company management. They will serve as a mentor and direct manager to Venture Directors, collaborating with senior management to drive progress, implement and maintain due diligence methodology, and manage negotiations. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned transactions negotiator with a track record of managing and growing strong teams.
Serve as a member of the Cambrian executive team as well as provide leadership, management oversight and strategic guidance for the Ventures function.
Lead weekly pipeline discussions and progress reports; finding and removing bottlenecks in the team's diligence process, escalating topics that need group input in a timely fashion, and setting deadlines
Thoroughly understand Cambrian's business model and support negotiation of term sheets, license agreements, etc.; pulling in experts/vendors/internal colleagues as necessary to bring transactions to completion
Ensure diligence rigor; providing feedback to the Venture and core asset diligence teams, updating diligence templates and materials, ensuring the right questions are addressed before Investment Committee decisions are made
Build and maintain sourcing model and strategy (e.g., academia, conferences, scientific journals); leveraging the Venture team to establish relationships with external partners and ensure a sizable and consistent volume of high-quality deals, including messaging and coverage plans
Determine methodology to measure team and individual performance; setting goals that align with business objectives and creating plans to achieve them
Design and lead hypothesis-generation process for finding new investments in the geroscience field, collaborating with senior leadership to foster alignment on investment mandate and strategic direction of the team
Guarantee consistency in Venture team deliverables across the pipeline due diligence process and pipeline company management
Manage and mentor Venture Directors, assessing their performance, development needs, and other growth areas
Bring best practices in diligencing, evaluation tools, and R&D strategies to the team, constantly refining those in use
Lead creation and maintenance of insightful data capture system and diligence outcomes to enhance group decision-making
Identify and perform deep diligence on a portfolio of assets, leading the biology diligence and coordinating chemistry, IP, and finance diligence from the rest of the Cambrian organization. As the Team Leader, will also support Ventures Directors as needed on the assets they lead.
Prepare and present scientific and business rationale for any recommendations and transaction proposals they identify to the Cambrian Investment Committee for approval.
Partner closely with CEO on investor relations and investor strategy including plan for, and direct dialogue with shareholders and potential investors, preparation of investor materials, and investor targeting strategy
Minimum eight years of experience in life sciences focused roles (e.g., investment banking, VC, PE) and an advanced degree in relevant field (PhD, MD, MSc). No background in geroscience required.
Successful track record in negotiations and transactions, as well as strong process/project management skills, including experience using latest tools, databases implementation, etc.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and strategic direction; including the ability to motivate, guide, support and manage multiple priorities in a positive, collaborative environment
Strong management experience along with the ability to mentor high-performing teams to deliver top-level output while maintaining a focus on the needs of the Cambrian
