Alkahest is seeking a patent agent to join our dynamic and collaborative legal team. Your primary responsibilities will be helping General Counsel manage the company’s existing patent portfolio as well as monitoring and intaking new innovations from our scientific groups. You will draft and prosecute patent applications in conjunction with outside patent counsel. You will also perform freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses—advising scientific, clinical, and business leaders within the company based on this work. The successful candidate should have patent prosecution experience with protein therapeutics and/or antibodies, with experience with small molecule patent prosecution a plus.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Drafting patent applications; analyzing and responding to office actions; communicating with USPTO
Performing freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses
Advising the company’s scientific, clinical, and business leaders on patent issues
Attending scientific meetings to monitor and capture innovation
Corresponding with outside patent counsel (US and Europe)
Researching and making recommendations on new USPTO regulations or other changes related to patent prosecution
Doctorate in a life science discipline
USPTO registration in good standing
Minimum of 3 years’ IP experience in biotech/pharma industry or law firm serving biotech/pharma clients
Strong analytical and research skills required, including experience with patent and non-patent literature databases
Experience performing freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses
Experience with nucleic acid/protein sequence databases
Experience working in wet lab environment highly desirable
High attention to detail combined with ability to multitask
Strong interpersonal skills as the position interacts regularly with departments across the organization
Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
