    Who You Are

    As a key member of our Global Environmental, Health, Safety & Security Team, the EHS Manager is responsible for effective coordination of projects, tasks and services to influence EH&S compliance and continuous improvement in an R&D Laboratory environment.  This position will provide integral support to the Cambridge site Environmental, Health & Safety program through governance of routine compliance activities, including but not limited to reporting, inspections and regulated waste management.  Leadership in this role includes effective participation in site Emergency Response and Risk Mitigation planning, preparation, and execution activities, and tracking of key metrics to support compliance, sustainability and continuous improvement initiatives at the site.

    Responsibilities

    Working under the leadership and supervision of the Director, Environmental, Health & Safety manage, engage, monitor, and act on all aspects of site activities including, but not limited to:

    • Supervising the site regulated waste management program including active participation in daily waste removal from labs, management of accumulation containers and labeling, third party coordination, shipping preparations, and recordkeeping.
    • Managing the site Chemical Inventory to ensure current data and enable compliance to local storage and handling requirements.
    • Coordinating with and supporting site EH&S service providers handling lab coats, first aid supplies, and other services as needed.
    • Assisting in Developing and Conducting EH&S training for employees and contractors, including orientation for new hires.
    • Leading the Planning & Coordination of emergency drills and response team preparation activities.
    • Coordinate and participate in facility EH&S inspections to mitigate hazards, EH&S risks and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
    • Supporting Contractor Management programs to drive compliance during maintenance and construction activities is enforced, including orientation for new service providers.
    • Performing New Chemical, New Process, New Equipment reviews to ensure they meet site EH&S requirements.
    • Performing job site Risk Assessments as needed in facilities and laboratory environments to identify unsafe conditions, employee exposure, ergonomic, and other compliance concerns, ensuring appropriate action is taken to correct deficiencies.
    • Engaging with site operational teams to influence and support good EH&S behaviors and compliance.
    • Monitor and maintain EH&S records and permits in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations and company requirements.
    • Lead and/or support EH&S incident investigations to identify root cause and ensure effective implementation of CAPAs.
    • Be a steward for the overall management, including required recordkeeping, of all site EH&S programs (i.e., Emergency Planning and Response, ERT, Laboratory Safety Programs, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene, Hazardous materials and waste identification, evaluation, management and reporting, working with the EHS Leadership Team to ensure all program obligations are met.
    • Participate in EH&S regulatory agency inspections of the site
    • Implement new programs and training as introduced by the EH&S Leadership Team.
    • Develop and communicate technical information in a manner that fosters understanding, decision-making, and positive interaction with employees, functional managers, & facility management teams.

    Requirements

    • Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or related Physical Science (i.e., Chemistry, Physics, etc.) strongly preferred.
    • 5 years of practical EH&S program management experience in a research, laboratory or manufacturing environment. Ergonomics experience a plus.
    • Knowledge of current UK EH&S regulatory requirements and ability to assess and identify their applicability to the site.
    • Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, with demonstratable application in root cause assessment.
    • Able to assess various emergency scenarios and evaluate suitable protective actions.
    • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong computer skills working with standard Microsoft Office and/or GoogleSuite applications
    • Able to function efficiently and independently in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to manage small projects with attention to detail and prioritization
    • Ability to spend extended hours on feet (standing, walking)
    • May be required to work weekends/evenings under emergency situations

    4-5 years of work experience in related EHS and Program Management capacity, including hands on management of Hazardous Materials and Waste, Contractor Safety and participation in EHS Compliance Inspections.  The ideal candidate will also have experience in:

    • Emergency Response Programs and Preparations (HAZWOPER)
    • Process and Job Hazard Analysis
    • Contractor Pre-Qualification
    • Written Program Development
    • Laboratory Standards Compliance

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Current Hazardous Waste training or equivalent training required to manage and approve paperwork for shipping of hazardous materials and waste
    • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification
    • Prior or current First Aid/CPR training
    • Professional Certification in, or progress towards, a Safety or Environmental Management discipline (i.e., ASP, CSP, CHMM, EIT)

    Daily Physical Requirements

    • Sitting, Standing, and Walking for 6-8 hours daily
    • Good Hand-Eye Coordination
    • Bending and Twisting
    • Lifting, up to 30 lbs.
    • Wearing Safety Glasses, Nitrile Gloves, Hard-Toed Shoes.
    • Climbing ladders for inspections and roof acces
