    Position Responsibilities:

    • Design and implement environmental, health, and safety programs covering all aspects of work being performed at Calico including but not limited to: BioSafety, Laboratory Animal Safety, Radiation Safety, Controlled Substance Management, Hazardous Waste Management, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Emergency Response, PPE, Contractor/Construction Safety, LOTO, Ladder Safety, Fall Protection, etc.
    • Serve as Chemical Hygiene and Biological Safety Officer, Acting Radiation Safety Officer and Controlled Substances program management
    • Lead and prepare quarterly Safety Committee meetings
    • Ensure compliance with the Hazardous Waste Management program including waste collection from labs. Work with vendors and lab members to manage waste appropriately, retain waste manifests and required documentation
    • Review incoming chemicals and hazardous materials for safety concerns and assist researchers in planning safe use and disposal procedures into their experimental design
    • Conduct Industrial Hygiene (IH) surveys to identify processes that pose a risk to the health and safety of employees and make recommendations for improvement
    • Perform risk/exposure assessments pertaining to laboratory/chemical/biological safety, contractor safety, electrical safety and more
    • Perform regular lab inspections and coordinate with lab members and facilities team regarding corrective actions
    • Respond to emergencies such as chemical or biological hazardous material spills, fire drills, gas leaks or natural disasters
    • Maintain Emergency Action Plan, Building Evacuation Team and conduct specialized training for Security and Ops team members for emergency plans
    • Conduct and design new safety training, review and update current training materials annually. Manage employee training files and ensure compliance and appropriate record-keeping procedures are in place
    • Perform incident investigations, keep and maintain OSHA 300 logs, file worker’s compensation paperwork and assist with return to work modifications after injuries
    • Implement and maintain chemical inventory system, SDS library, and the “BioRAFT” Learning Management System
    • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments that apply to task, departments, and the overall site
    • Manage annual permit renewals as well as new applications for all regulatory permits
    • Perform updates as needed and communicate with regulators to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations
    • Participate as an active member of the IACUC committee, review protocols and create and review SOPs
    • Coordinate with the Operations and Facilities team on new lab and facility safety design requirements. Review plans and assist with permitting documentation
    • Accomplishes department objectives by managing staff; planning and evaluating department activities. Leads the team by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and developing employees

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or EHS field
    • 9+ years Environmental Health & Safety experience preferred, ideally in a biotech research and development organization
    • Safety certification preferred (ASP, CSP, CIH, RBP, CBSP)Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, complex, and fast-paced team environment
    • Strong people management and project management experience
    • Experience implementing company-wide programs and managing process change
    • Must have the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels of the organization, both internally and externally. Good influencing skills, persuasive, and customer service-oriented demeanor are essential for success
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
    • Proven background in building and working with collaborative teams
    • Ability to meet deadlines, multi-task and effectively and professionally deal with customers and external contacts to the Company
    • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently
    • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, Microsoft outlook, and phone/tablet applications
    • DOT & Title 22 Certification is a plus
