POSITION SUMMARY
The Sr. Manager/Associate Director of Laboratory Operations will manage the day-to-day operations of our Cambridge, MA research laboratories. The role will work closely with our scientists to ensure efficient operation of the labs in a fast-paced and highly collaborative startup environment. This position will integrate with other functional areas (Site Operations, Facilities, IT, Legal, etc.) and requires an individual with strong organizational and project management skills who can simultaneously balance multiple competing priorities while anticipating upcoming needs. The position is based in Cambridge, MA, and reports to the Director of Facilities Operations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and lead the research operations function, with an emphasis on the management and development of lab support staff and consultants to ensure prioritization and efficiency in service operations.
Oversee all day-to-day lab operations including inventory management, remediation of technical issues, equipment maintenance, waste collection/disposal, implementation of lab organization systems, and new lab employee onboarding.
Partner with scientific leaders to define, identify, and execute solutions for the lab, including optimizing laboratory space, organization, and efficiency.
Plan and execute work across a wide range of activities in support of a safe, clean, and efficient laboratory environment, and manage the EH&S program in collaboration with safety consultants and stakeholders.
Perform sample management related tasks, including logging, labeling, preparing for shipping, transporting to labs, inventorying, disposing, etc.
Create SOPs and manuals as needed for all lab, facilities, safety procedures and processes, and maintain lab and facility permits.
Oversee and maintain service and maintenance programs on all laboratory equipment.
Part of 24-hour on-call response team for facility and EH&S issues and emergencies.
Primary point of contact for all lab related mechanical, electrical, and plumbing concerns.
Additional job related duties and responsibilities as required.
Manage and oversee work of lab support staff, consultants, and contractors.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
BS with at least 5 years of lab management experience in an industry setting.
Experience handling BSL-2 materials, hazardous chemicals and waste, and compressed gases.
On-site presence during core work hours required; occasional off-hours work may be required.
Knowledge of laboratory safety and associated regulatory guidelines, and experience in handling and managing laboratory chemicals and biological materials.
Proven experience training and managing technician level staff.
Able to shift, lift, push, and pull a minimum of 50 lbs.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, prioritize tasks, and escalate issues as needed.
