Retro develops therapies for diseases driven by the biology of aging. We work on (1) partial reprogramming, (2) blood factors, and (3) autophagy to rejuvenate cell and tissue function with the ultimate aim of adding years to healthy human lifespan.
What is the opportunity? This is a 3-year accelerated program consisting of hands-on work in an aging biology lab and mentoring from some of the world's top scientists in the field. Fellows will support and independently conduct cutting-edge, well-resourced aging research in promising translational domains. The program consists of a set of sequenced growth milestones that define readiness to take on a full scientist position.
Who is eligible? Exceptionally capable graduates (STEM Bachelors or Masters, with an emphasis in biology) who aspire to become independent scientists in industry, who are obsessed with the beauty and power of science, and who want to expand human healthspan. Competitive candidates will have acquired at least two of the possible specific prerequisites skills listed under the relevant section below.
Outcome? If a fellow successfully meets growth expectations and milestones of progressive independence over the 3-year program period, the fellow will be offered a Scientist position at Retro.
Compensation? This fellowship pays more than double the median graduate student stipend in the Bay Area for three years.
Specific Prerequisite Skills? Applicants are expected to be competent in two or more of the skills listed below:
Omics data generation, especially single-cell RNA-seq
Data visualization, exploration, and statistics
Molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, Gibson assembly, DNA extraction, etc)
CRISPR screens
Cell culture and assays with impeccable sterile technique
Calm, deft handling of lab animals
Ability to reliably execute long experimental protocols, anticipating every detail beforehand, and moving quickly with precious, time-sensitive samples
Ability to source/propose new protocols/ideas by reading/distilling scientific literature
Flow cytometry panel design and compensation
Histology and experience with image quantification software
