    Loyal

    Description

    Data Scientist / Bioinformaticist

Loyal is a seed stage company developing drugs to help dogs live longer, healthier lives. We see aging as a disease that is able to be slowed and improved with medicines. Loyal was spun out of Laura Deming’s The Longevity Fund and is well funded by top venture capitalists and angels.

We are hiring a Data Scientist / Bioinformaticist to join the rapidly growing Bioinformatics team! We are looking for someone with a strong computational biology and/or machine learning background to help drive multiple data-intensive projects forward. This is a unique opportunity to work with datasets and have real-world impacts much faster than is currently possible in human research, with the goal of applying what we learn to humans in the future. You will be taking on projects ranging from omics analysis to image classification, and therefore need to be highly flexible and willing to learn, always looking for opportunities to drive company goals forward. The environment is highly collaborative and your insights beyond bioinformatics will be highly valuable. Loyal is an early stage company, which means there are no stringent hierarchies, silos, or bureaucracy. While you will be ultimately responsible for executing key bioinformatics projects, you will have ample opportunity to work with, learn from, and influence other sides of the company.

Loyal is founded and led by a first-gen, female CEO – we encourage and look forward to diverse applicants.

As part of the Bioinformatics team you will:

    • Devise and execute sophisticated analyses to extract meaningful and actionable information from various omics and outcome datasets from clinical / translational and third party studies

    • Leverage existing open-source databases

    • Provide algorithmic and machine learning support for various data pipeline projects including image and video analysis - deep learning experience a plus

    • Contribute statistical support for clinical operations

    • Contribute expertise for strategizing and designing compute infrastructure

    • Present findings at regular meetings for both technical and non-technical audiences, up to the executive level

    • Help set standards for code and data management

    Basic Qualifications

    • MA/MS in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology / or other computationally intensive field

    • Experience in analyzing and modeling high dimensional biological data. Willing to take on exploratory novel methods.

    • Solid experience in statistics and modeling, including but not limited to linear, non-linear and bayesian modeling, machine learning, and algorithm development.

    • Experience programming in python (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, scipy) in a Linux environment

    • Experience in a collaborative coding environment (familiar with code review, architectures and strategies)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • PhD in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology or other computationally intensive field

    • Experience with deep learning packages (pytorch, pytorchlightnin, tensorflow, keras, wandb), cloud computing (AWS, Azure), relational databases, Apache Spark

    • Image and video analysis is a plus

    How you work and think

    • Strong desire to work collaboratively within a team and across teams

    • Always looking for opportunities to assist others

    • Process driven - creates frameworks to tackle challenging problems

    • Mission driven - able to put day to day work in the context of the overall goals of the company

    • Desire to learn and grow in ability and responsibilities

    • Track record in communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders

    • Able to work in a fast paced and ever-changing environment

    • Empathy toward others and low ego
