Position Description:
Calico is seeking an exceptional Project Team Leader (PTL) to partner with key stakeholders to define the vision and drug discovery and development strategy for assigned programs, and to provide experienced leadership and direction to the cross-functional team.
The successful candidate will
- Lead the project team for pipeline compounds as they transition from candidate nomination through IND filing and early development through clinical Proof of Concept.
- Be responsible for partnering with key stakeholders in developing and/or refining the strategic overview (vision, strategic context, and core strategy) for assigned programs.
- Be accountable for presenting strategic overview to Calico’s Drug Development Review Committee (DDRC) for endorsement
- Be responsible for ensuring cross-functional matrix decisions are made in a timely manner and are aligned with DDRC endorsed strategic overview for the program.
- Ensure strategic plans and decisions are considered and evaluated, weighing speed, cost, and probability of technical and regulatory success. Present options and recommendations for assigned programs at key inflection points to the DDRC for final decision.
- Ensure assigned programs are appropriately resourced and in accordance with specified timelines and budgets
- Ensure the team achieves and maintains a successful team dynamic with a high-level of sustainable performance. In particular, the PTL must ensure the opinions and perspectives of internal and external partners and stakeholders are heard and understood.
- As deemed appropriate, contribute to the establishment and improvement of processes to support the drug discovery and development portfolio
Position requirements:
- A PhD degree in life sciences or a scientific discipline related to drug development and/or an MD/PharmD is preferred
- At least 10 years of biotech/pharmaceutical industry experience in drug development, preferably in both non-clinical and early clinical drug development
- Excellent knowledge of drug development processes and deliverables at each stage of the pipeline
- Successful track record of leading projects/program teams in a cross-functional team environment from pre-IND-enabling activities through early clinical development (ideally through NDA filing)
- Experience successfully leading projects with participation by external collaborators
- Excellent leadership skills with exceptional decision-making and analytical skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships, promote collaborations, and to lead through the ambiguity of developing novel therapeutics in unchartered territory
- Must be willing to work onsite three days a week
