Head of Translational Data Science & Bioinformatics

Relation Therapeutics is looking for a Head of Translational Data Science and Bioinformatics, reporting to the CTO (with a dotted line to the CSO).

The successful candidate will develop and deliver translational data science and bioinformatics capability in support of new medicines discovery and business development at Relation (in partnership with colleagues in the experimental, clinical, ML and engineering leadership teams). They will work closely with the wet lab and clinical teams to deliver insights and tools that support the delivery of new medicines to patients and provide technical leadership on developing our in-house bioinformatics capabilities, data storage and access infrastructure. They will manage, mentor, develop and lead junior staff from different backgrounds across data science and bioinformatics while attracting key talent and remaining at the cutting edge of bioinformatics methods in single cell transcriptomics and/or genetics.

Role responsibilities. You will:

Develop and deliver translational data science and bioinformatics capability in support of new medicines discovery and business development at Relation (in partnership with colleagues in the experimental, clinical, ML and engineering leadership teams incl. the CTO and CSO).

Work closely with the wet lab and clinical teams to deliver insights and tools that support the delivery of new medicines to patients

Provide technical leadership on developing our in-house bioinformatics capabilities, data storage and access infrastructure

Identify key data, methods and pipeline tools to be included in our data science platforms

Contribute to innovation, specifically to idea generation and/or experimentation, through tangible and measurable data-driven criteria

Develop Relation’s data science standards and ways of working, in partnership with other technical leaders

Attract and manage key talent

Provide mentorship to junior data scientists across data science, bioinformatics and software development

Remain at the cutting edge of bioinformatics methods in single cell transcriptomics and/or genetics

Bring a “can-do” attitude, leadership and teamwork, and inspire others on culture change

Professionally, you have:

A PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or other quantitative discipline; or equivalent industrial experience

A demonstrable track record of delivering (as technical lead) complex data science or bioinformatics projects to customers. The projects must have involved at least 2 other stakeholders and 1-2 committed FTEs (preferably PhD level or above)

Experience with single-cell data or genetics data preferred, or any other biological / health / chemical data

Experience managing, mentoring, developing and leading junior staff from different backgrounds across data science and bioinformatics

Demonstrated track record in building collaborations and communicating effectively with diverse teams and functions, including biologists, clinicians, chemists, machine learning scientists, computational biologists, and software engineers.

An ability to manage projects and deliver to defined timelines

Must be familiar with modern software engineering practices, the use of modern collaborative tools and CI/CD (e.g. GitHub, Slack, Jira, Trello etc.)

Committed to excellence in software engineering using (ideally) Python. Preferred: proficient Python developer with 2 - 5 years of industrial experience
